Increased Arachnid Activity

Megan Pinneo

If you haven't taken notice already, you may start to see an increase in spider activity in the next couple of weeks as the temperatures begin to cool off making way for Fall. While it is not widely known, male spiders typically seek a mate around late Summer early Fall. This includes tarantula spiders, which according to Mount Diablo State Park rangers, they have already begun seeing tarantulas popping up early due to the cooler temperatures. Be advised that mating season usually lasts through the end of October.

It's good to keep in mind that while tarantulas are intimidating to look at (for all you arachnophobes!) they are quite docile and non-aggressive unless provoked (which we DO NOT recommend!) Most female tarantulas remain in their burrow, so if you run into a tarantula while out hiking or if you live on acreage, chances are it's a male. Fun fact: Male tarantulas have been known to search for up to four miles to find a mate! Kind of romantic!

On a separate note, general household spiders will also be seeking mates around this time frame. As always, we recommend staying consistent with your pest control services and doing your best to eliminate the arachnids main food source which are of course other bugs, but most importantly FLIES. If you find yourself having a particularly intense fly infestation, whether outside or inside your home, we recommend picking up a fly catcher or trap at either Home Depot or Lowes to help out. These usually cost anywhere from $5.00 to $7.00 depending on the brand or type you buy. Making sure your trash bids are secure and covered is also a good idea, since this is a popular place for spiders to set up camp. (Coincidence? We think not.)

We hope this helps answer some of your questions about the increase in spider activity as of lately. If ever you have a concern or need your pest control technician to come back out to do a respray for you, don't hesitate to give us a call!

The Brown Widow

Brown Widow Spider

We all know about the black widow spider but did you know that there is also a brown widow spiderBrown widow spiders can be found in Southern California  and actually out number the black widow spider. They are brown, tan and gray covered in a spotted pattern. Like the black widow spider they have a yellowish or bright orange hourglass marking on the underside of their abdomen. There are dark bands that wrap around their legs, with their front legs longer than the others. Black widows are usually a little larger than the brown widow, and the brown widow spider's bite is also less venomous. You can find brown widows hiding in and around our home in places such as; solid / plastic patio furniture, wood fences and plastic playground equipment. They are not limited to these areas so be sure to keep an eye out.

Think you have a brown widow spider problem? Send Black Knight Termite and Pest Control to help you out with the problem. 951.694.8100. A Pest Control Service may be just what you need. Some one to take care of them and the webs they leave behind, not to mention their eggs!

Winter Pests

Cold Weather Pests

Just because there is a chill in the air and no Summer Sun there are still Pests to be concerned about.  While the heat brings more of the flying Pests such as Bees and Mosquitoes the Winter Season has us looking down at Mice, Spiders and Cockroaches. Winter Pests are something to avoid while Mice carry diseases, Spiders bite, and Cockroaches can trigger asthma and allergies. We share this Earth with Insects and Rodents but we do not have to share our home with them as well.  Calling a local Pest Control Professional would be a positive reassuring way to help rid your home of any existing Winter Pests however, there are many things you can do in or around your home to keep the Pests from taking over.

Winter Pest Prevention Tips:

  • Seal any cracks in and around your home. Check where pipes enter the home, Mice can fit through a space as small as a dime.
  • Keep storage units, garages and closets clutter free.
  • Repair damaged screens in windows and sliding doors.
  • Keep crawl spaces, basements and attics well ventilated and dry.
  • Eliminate any leaking pipes and clogged drains, these can be places of moisture which are favorited by Cockroaches.
  • Screen the chimney.
  • Store food in air tight containers.
  • Throw out trash regularly.
