Ever think that social distancing at home could actually be attracting more pests? Well is can. Changing our behaviors by being home more often and doing most of what we used to do outdoors could be bringing pests straight to your door, literally.
For the past few months have been dining in producing more waste, and all the excess food we produce attracts more pests. Our weekly grocery delivery service while it may be extremely convenient it can also carry some insects all its own. Produce, such as, lettuce, broccoli or a sack of potatoes can be carrying tiny hidden insects. Online shopping is booming but boxes and packages can also be carrying pests as well. Humans are not the only ones that are staying in, family pets are too. Taking our furry friends out on a walk then bringing them in for the better part of the day has become a bit of a routine, and we know they don’t get cleaned off after each walk around the block. Wait, your home isn’t the only place that can be harboring pests, the garage is most likely being overlooked. Cars are sitting for longer than we are, neglected by us, but maybe not by rodents under the hood. So as you can see, we may be avoiding everyone else and welcoming tiny creatures indoors instead.
How to get rid of unwanted pests.
You have done such a good job at keeping all the unwanted guests away but what about the pests?

All the dining in has accumulated much more trash- Be sure to throw trash out frequently.
It is best not to leave trash out over night. Even when the trash is in an outdoor bin, make sure that it is sealed properly. Rodents and raccoons are crafty creatures and can easily get into most sealed trash bins. Their strength may surprise you.
Grocery delivery- So convenient I know.
Put all produce straight into the sink for immediate washing. Be thorough. Pull apart lettuce leaves, watch for corn husks, and the inside of the bags they came in. Give boxes a once over to be sure there are no holes where a potential pest could have made their way in.
Amazon delivery much?- Always check the packages for tears or holes, especially large cardboard boxes. It is exciting to get that package you have been waiting for but try to open the package outside and leave packing materials out and throw our as soon as possible. Do not store packages in patios, this could call on temptation of rodents.
Furbabies- Our beloved, they could do no wrong right? Wrong!
It is a bit much to ask that we bathe our pests after every bathroom break, but we can limit the places that we allow them to go while under social distancing. Keep it simple. Take pets our where you are familiar with. Back yards with low cut grass. Neighborhood where pets can walk a straight path. Avoid high brush areas. STOP, before you bring them indoors, check their fur and paws for any pests that may have hitched a ride.
Check the garage. Look under the hood of your car for any rodents that could be chewing through wires. If you are planning on doing any reorganization check all the storage bins that are coming from the garage into the home. Things have probably been sitting for a while and could be carrying some rodents or spiders in them.
Common Sense and a Once Over
Some of the best advice when dealing with pests is to keep it clean.
With Covid19 fresh on our minds, cleaning and disinfecting is pumping in our blood. We should be applying the cleanliness we have been practicing on ourselves onto our homes.
