All About Mud Dauber Wasps

Mud Daubers are not your average wasps, getting their name from the nests that they create out of mud. You may have seen them around since they are pretty common here in the U.S, you just may not have known it. The summer months are when they are most active in building their muddy nest. Mud Daubers are usually black and my have a bit of metallic luster to them. Often known for their long slender body with a thread-like mid section. They are a solitary wasp, not living in large colonies or flying with a swarm of wasps. Mud Daubers thankfully are not typically aggressive and rarely sting humans. However, you do not want them building and leaving behind nests, old nests are often taken over by other more dangerous wasps.

Mud Daubers Nest

The female mud dauber is the one to construct the nest made of mud. In the nest there are many small tubes formed side by side, with a small round opening. You can find mud daubers nests in areas of shelter, such as- eaves, under patio covers, and they will even make way into an open shed or storage cabinet. One way to prevent mud wasps from building a nest around your home is to get rid of harborage spots. Seal cracks or holes that you may find around your property. Be proactive in checking the spots that are welcoming to the wasps. Call a professional at Black Knight Pest Control if you find you have a wasp or nest issue. A vacant nest could potentially lead to a more dangerous wasp taking residence.

Conclusion

While mud daubers are non aggressive an abandoned nest could mean a highly dangerous wasp will soon take presence in the nest. Mud daubers are simply a nuisance pest. That being said mud daubers do not defend their own nests, they do help to control spiders, and other insects. Don’t risk mud daubers attracting more dangerous wasps onto your property, call a professional when you notice wasp activity. Have the wasp properly identified and treated.
