Hornet Problem
Did you know Hornets can actually be an alternate form of pest control? By which hornets being the predator they are, their special purpose is to control the population of other insects, such as, spiders, flies, and caterpillars, to name a few. That being said you most likely do not want a large hornets nest displayed in the eaves of your home. While they can be helpful in your pest control maintenance they can also be a nuisance. Calling a professional to eliminate a hornet infestation is the safest, and most effective for exterminating a wasp colony.
Characteristics about the Hornet
Hornets are similar in appearance to yellow jacks, with a wingspan capability of 3 inches! They can be found almost anywhere, favoring places like, meadows, woodlands, playgrounds, suburban areas, and cemeteries. A hornets nest is made of a paper-like material made of wood fibers that have been chewed up into a pulp. Hornets are not usually aggressive unless they become threatened, and feel the need to protect their nest. The potent venomous sting from a hornet can be harmful to humans, and even deadly in rare cases. Hornets release more venom per sting than any other stinging insects. Unlike bees a hornet’s stinger stays intact when it attack, therefore they do not die after they sting. In turn, it is NOT recommended that you try to remove or exterminate a hornets nest on your own.
Attracting and Deterring Hornets
Sugary ripe fruits like figs, apples, and pears tend to attract hornets. Limiting the amount of sugary fruits could help to prevent them from swarming your property. To keep them away from yourself, avoid wearing floral scented fragrances. Similar to other pests certain plants/smells will help repel hornets. Try planting or displaying, eucalyptus, thyme, and citronella, around the perimeter of your home in efforts to keep them at bay. Another word of advice in keeping hornets, and other wasps away is to seal up any dog food and or bird seed, avoid leaving it sitting out if possible. Lastly, and as always, keep it CLEAN! Avoid clutter, even outdoors.
