Keeping Bees Away From Your Property
More than 50 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergies each year. Having to deal with irritated dry eyes, and constant sniffles, you may also notice a high number in bee sightings this year. The spring and summer months are when bees are most active, and as we creep into fall they are still very much here. Bees can not only be an annoyance, but be harmful to those that are allergic to a bee’s sting.
Bees are pollinators and are a necessary part of our agricultural system which brings some good, but still does not mean we want them around our family.
There are several steps that you can take to help prevent from bees inhabiting your home.
Bees tend to make their homes in areas that are dry, safe, and quiet. Which is why you may spot a nest in the high reaches of your roofs edges. If you come across any cracks in the ceiling, or wall it is important that you fill it promptly to avoid bees from entering. Steel wool or caulking to fill the spaces should do the trick.
Start with a walk around the property
The key is inspecting your property often for bees, checking high areas of the home for nests. Catching a nest in the early stages is always preferred rather than an established colony.
Before you start your inspection of the property for bees you should know what areas bees are most likely to inhabit.
Check these areas:
Pile of wood behind the house
The wheel barrow behind the house or in the shed
The shed walls or the floor beneath
Roof vents all over the house
The eaves and the soffits
The gutters especially if it has not rained in a while
Empty flower pots and containers
Cinder blocks
Bird houses in trees
The Barbecue grill especially one kept outside
Chimney holes
Air conditioner systems
